 The Benefits of Hydraulic Tanks

A Hydraulic Tank which is also commonly known as a reservoir are essential when it comes to storing your hydraulic fluid.

When storing your oil you must consider that when the system shuts down the oil will drain from the system and return to the tank. Therefore there must be enough capacity for the oil that is in your system.

A Hydraulic Tank can perform a range of incredibly important functions, including dissipation of heat through its walls which is simply the cooling the hydraulic fluid. More heat dissipates from rectangular tanks opposed to round tanks due to the increased surface area, therefore the larger tank capacity the greater the cooling capacity.   

Also conditioning the hydraulic fluid itself to settle contaminants and improve the hydraulic fluid quality.  When the hydraulic oil rests within the tank, contaminants that the oil has picked up within the hydraulic system will settle at the bottom of the hydraulic tank and will form as sludge. This sludge must then be cleaned up to prevent it from building up and getting into the suction line.

Hydraulic Tanks prevent air from causing problems within the system. This is done by the air rising to the top of the hydraulic oil and exit the tank through the breather cap. The breather cap on the hydraulic tank should be checked and also cleaned on a monthly basis whilst also be replaced once a year.

Choosing the Right Size Hydraulic Tank

There are a number of different factors to consider when sizing up your Hydraulic Tank.

A basic method that is commonly used to calculate the size of your Hydraulic Tank is that the volume of the tank should be at least three times the rated output of the hydraulic systems pump. For example if your system is using a 5 litre per minute pump then you should have a 15 litre tank. This method should also allow you to have enough volume for the hydraulic fluid to rest between cycles for containment settling, deaeration and dissipation, however duty cycle and ambient air temperature should always been taken into account.

There are different styles and sizes of Hydraulic Tanks that you can choose from to suit your requirements. For most hydraulic systems the tank also acts as the mounting surface for many hydraulic components such as the pump, motor and valves.
